We had dinner with my dad yesterday. I'm trying to schedule more time with him - not least because he's given up his car so he can't get out beyond his (now-reduced) ability to walk. He has been craving pizza, so we went to a neighborhood joint. It was fine; not spectacular, but perfectly serviceable for a local pizza place. For my dad, it's more about the memories. He used to go there regularly with his girlfriend and a next-door neighbor, both of whom are no longer alive.

My dad also mentioned that he'd kind of like to go on an Alaska cruise. We are at least going to investimagate that; it would be a good gift for him if it's something we can afford or at least swing. The wife also mentioned seeing if her mom would fly back here as we rarely see her, since she's on the other coast. That might require three rooms, a suite, or some combination. My dad might be okay with sharing a room with the wife's mom.

I'll be writing about my upcoming cruise in Alaska. We're using a travel agent. I recommend using one, it makes things easier. If you check out the Norwegian Cruise Line website, you can get a good idea of what's offered. Many of the excursions are rated low to moderate effort, like the bus and railroad trips. The cruise season is short, I think just April through September. The cruise I'm doing is the last cruise of the season, ending October 2nd.

B and I are going on an Alaska cruise in May for our 10-year anniversary (observed). We're doing the cruise first and then continuing onto a cruise tour from Anchorage into Denali for a few days before finally flying home from Fairbanks. It's on Holland America, which is the same line (and ironically the same ship) as we took for the JoCo Cruise. I been wanting to take B on this for years, because I really want him to see Glacier Bay before we lose the glaciers, and this was our excuse.

(Icon was from my first Alaskan cruise, 23 years ago, although this is a view of Canada, I believe.)

One of my undergrad geology proffs had a summer job doing lectures on an Alaska cruise, and the stories he told of that job made it sound really appealing. If I weren't attending SCA events I would have enjoyed such a job. If whomever is doing those talks now is half as knowledgeable and interesting to listen to as he was, that part of the trip will be worth it, and the views are always worth it (even when it rains, and it will, because southeast Alaska is a rainforest).

I don't know your infrastructure, but here mobility scooters are common assistive devices for individuals with reduced mobility. Could be an option so that father's world won't be unduly reduced in scope?
