We spent some time Saturday with my dad. It's always good to see him. Sadly, we left the cheesecake we had specifically made for him in our fridge. Yes, we'll enjoy it with tea this week, but the point was for him to enjoy it as that's his favorite dessert.

After getting decent chile rellenos for dinner, we decided to get ice cream instead. Yelp suggested a nearby gelateria - which turned out to be at an address that didn't exist. We ended up at a local Mexican ice cream (and torta) place for okay ice cream made in-house. (I had nutella and peanut, which was pretty good.)

Yesterday was my dad's 82nd birthday. We went to his place, chatted a while and told stories about our Italy trip, then took him out to dinner. He wanted to go to a local pizza place, which is decent. It was a good visit. Apparently the postcard we mailed from Italy finally arrived last week - six weeks after we mailed it. Got to love international mail.

I had planned to make a cheesecake (his favorite) but ran out of time and ert. We ended up buying a Key lime pie at the farmers' market, which thankfully was pretty good.

There's a guy usually running a charcoal grill a few blocks away from his place. They used to do tri-tip, but that got too expensive and now they only grill spatchcocked chickens. Still good, so we picked one up before we got to his place. Rather than leave it in the car and sun, we took it up and put it in his fridge... where it remains today. Darn. We were looking forward to that for dinner tonight.

Excused from jury duty

I successfully pled hardship, since we have plane tickets for the wedding next weekend. I would have been fine with postponement, but I was dismissed. It was a three-week trial, which would not have been ideal given that I was just out for two weeks...

Operation Feline Desperation was a mixed success. While the wife was gone, Miss Bea did in fact snuggle on my lap a couple days in a row - but bookended that with a couple days ignoring me on either side. Yesterday, with the wife (thankfully) home, Bea immediately returned to ecstatically snoozing on her.

Cats, man.

My alarm didn't go off today. I didn't wake up much beyond when I usually get up, but... with the wife on the other coast things are a bit disjointed. I decided to work from home today rather than rush to get out the door.

Miss Bea was willing to give me a few cuddles in the early morning. (I am hoping that loneliness and desperation make her willing to sit on me during the week.)

Holiday, Family, and Fud

We drove down the Peninsula to have dim sum with my mother. Which has been our tradition the last few years, because it gives us a defined time with a limit and avoids inviting her to our house. (Medium-length story with vitriol, not something I want to go into right now.) It was fine. She is turning 80 next year and has developed the old-woman hunch.

Xmas Eve dinner with my dad - it's good spending time with him. He wanted to go to a local Mexican restaurant where he has good memories of time with his girlfriend. We went last year on Xmas Eve and were pleasantly impressed. Unfortunately, it was closed this time; presumably the combination of Xmas Eve and Sunday was too much. We hadn't bothered to check because it was open last year. So we drove until we found something, which turned out to be an adequate pizza place. Not what we had our mouths made up for, but I promised Dad we'd visit in January and get Mexican food.

The Xmas pudding flamed beautifully and was tasty. Cheesy jokes from the crackers. A good visit.

Happy Dies Natalis Solis Invicti! We had aged boozy eggnog, popovers with salmon, and a poached egg over arugula. I am thinking about having a second cup of coffee and settling in with a book.

Thanksgiving was very nice. Our friends J&W invited us over; it was the four of us, my dad, and her mom visiting from the East Coast. We had lots of good chattage and food. I made a pecan pie, the wife cooked brussels sprouts and made hard sauce for the pie, and I made a radicchio salad.

While I didn't overeat, the richer food meant I didn't sleep as well as I would have liked. And while today was expectedly slow, I still had to show up to work.

We visited my dad for his early birthday (actually next week). It was good to spend some time with him. He is getting a bit frailer and his balance can be a bit dodgy. He's in decent shape for being almost 82, but.

We took him out for Mexican food, the same place we went Christmas Eve. I had a chile relleno again. Dad ordered a tamale and enchilada, and the wife tried their fried fish with garlic sauce. All quite good, although the (whole, with head) fish was far more than she could eat. We're having the rest tonight for dinner with a salad.

Now to process some strawberry ice cream and work on the bills. As opposed to what I really want to do, which is curl up under the covers with a book.

We had dinner with my dad yesterday. I'm trying to schedule more time with him - not least because he's given up his car so he can't get out beyond his (now-reduced) ability to walk. He has been craving pizza, so we went to a neighborhood joint. It was fine; not spectacular, but perfectly serviceable for a local pizza place. For my dad, it's more about the memories. He used to go there regularly with his girlfriend and a next-door neighbor, both of whom are no longer alive.

My dad also mentioned that he'd kind of like to go on an Alaska cruise. We are at least going to investimagate that; it would be a good gift for him if it's something we can afford or at least swing. The wife also mentioned seeing if her mom would fly back here as we rarely see her, since she's on the other coast. That might require three rooms, a suite, or some combination. My dad might be okay with sharing a room with the wife's mom.

Today is my lovely wife's birthday. I hope it gets better.
Our power flickered several times over the course of a couple hours, then went out completely around 10 PM. That's unusual since we're on the hospital's grid and they get all the redundancy possible, for obvious reasons. It's not back on yet; PG&E says "5 PM" which means they have no clue.

Because I didn't go into the fridge this morning, I forgot my carefully-packed lunch.

At least the outage page shows no problems at the local restaurant where we have a dinner reservation.

Happy Dies Natalis Solis Invicti!

We visited my dad yesterday. He asked to go to a local Mexican restaurant that he had visited many times with his deceased girlfriend. I wasn't expecting much, but the important thing was his wishes.

I was very pleasantly surprised by their chile relleno. The batter was light, eggy, and fluffy; good amount of cheese stuffed in the pepper; and fresh out of the fryer. Honestly, the best chile relleno I've had in quite some time. The only thing that would have improved it is more heat - using a poblano pepper, perhaps. It was quite mild.

The lemon cheesecake with raspberry topping turned out quite well (we've pretty much got that recipe dialed in) and I promised to visit again in a couple months. I haven't been as good at that as I should be, especially since he's only an hour away.

Today I made yogurt rough-puff biscuits with homemade jam, and later today there will be boozy eggnog and finishing off our gourmet chocolate advent calendar.

Thanksgiving with my dad went well. I cooked a large turkey breast sous vide, then pulled out my seldom-used Smoking Gun. Seldom-used because it doesn't actually impart much smoke, but we did get some additional flavor on the turkey breast so what the heck. Everything was pre-cooked so we nuked everything except the brussels sprouts, which we put in his small toaster oven to maintain crunch. The only thing that didn't work that well was the gravy; I like thick gravy, but it should pour. This batch... didn't. Two days later, it's more like a thin pâté. At least it tasted good.

My dad said that this was the best meal he had had in a long time. I took it as the compliment he intended. (Sadly, with a couple cases of COVID among the residents, their dining hall is shut down - so he is getting cold delivered food, often wrong. I am sure that also contributed to his happiness with the dinner.)

For Xmas, Dad asked if we could go to a local Mexican place that he went to with his former girlfriend. That's fine - the important thing is having him happy.

Thanksgiving was good. I got up around the usual (non-work) time, did some kitchen cleaning, and made a pecan pie. It looked really good (I tried to make some effort on the aesthetics) and smelled fabulous. The wife prepped brussels sprouts; we already had a cranberry-apple chutney and hard sauce made the day before. Instead of going to my dad's, Wendy and Josh invited us to their place (along with Dani) so we didn't have to do anything else.

I snuggled with Miss Bea under the covers and read. Wendy asked to push back an hour for various reasons, which was not a problem. Eventually we gathered up our stuff and drove to pick up my dad. When we got there we had a mild concern because he wasn't answering his phone (or the knock at his door). I started to worry that we were duplicating a Christmas a few years back where he drove to our place as we drove to his. But it turned out that he had just been upstairs doing a jigsaw puzzle.

Easy 20-minute drive up the road to W&J's, and we socialized for a while before Dani arrived. Eventually we had way too much food: pumpkin soup (Dani), turkey and stuffing (that approximated my family's One True Recipe, so it made me happy), our sprouts with house-cured bacon, four (!) different kinds of cranberry sauce - one of which was served directly from the can with ridges for the one person who wanted it, but the other three were homemade; mashed potatoes, and sauteed kale. Then our pie and a lovely pumpkin cheesecake from Dani for dessert.

We introduced my dad to Cards Against Humanity. He didn't quite know what to make of it but eventually got into it and won a couple rounds. We left around 9 PM, because driving him home and then us was a 90-minute trip and I am working today.

I am thankful for family, friends, and food to share with them.

Miss Bea woke me up before my alarm, demanding scritches and pets. It wasn't all bad though: I realized we hit a round number.

Sometime between May and October '91 (we never recorded the exact date), I flirted with a cute girl at a dance practice. She flirted back. We went on a couple dates, which led to a relationship.

Five cars, four cats, three moves, two mortgages, and one marriage later - we've been together thirty years. Here's to at least thirty more.

My dad lived in Greenville for nearly ten years, so I am familiar with many of the buildings that were just destroyed in the Dixie fire. His former house was within walking distance of downtown, so it's probably gone too.

I took yesterday off work for the wife's birthday. We had a relaxing day, punctuated by a drive down to a local open space preserve for a hike. It was a glorious day for it. I would have been happier with redwoods, but what we got was still nice - chaparral and a lake with ducks and geese.

We got to see my dad. For 45 minutes, 12 feet away, everyone masked for the entire time. But at least we got to see him. And we delivered some rye and pumpernickel bagels as a CARE package.

Welp, the inevitable happened.

I got an e-mail from my dad - the semi-assisted living place he's in has a resident with COVID. That person has been transferred to a hospital and everyone is locked in until they get tested. Who knows how long that will be (I'm sure they are trying to get tests quickly).
