Project Reorganize status: ongoing. Progress is progressing.
Today we picked up the short/narrow armoire. On the way there, we briefly debated the two placement options.

  1. butt up the short armoire against the wall where the 8' bookcase is now; butt up the 3-panel armoire against the short one; put plastic boxes of project fabric next to that, which leaves access to the closet. The short armoire gets used for fabric and other project boxes that have not been moved into the short closet she filled with shelving.
  2. move the antique sewing machine from my side of the bedroom to where the 8' bookcase is now, use the short armoire for my (mostly) work clothes, stack boxes as #1.

In either case, we get rid of the Ikea armoire and put the 8' bookcase in its place.

The wife really favored #1. I admit #2 had grown on me but I wasn't so taken with the idea that I wanted to fight for it. Also, the short armoire doesn't have a hanging rod (just a slide with a few places for hanging) so I wouldn't be able to fit as much in there as I probably need to. #2 can still happen(ish) when we can find yet another armoire that has sufficient hanging space. And as importantly, when we feel the budget supports it. So probably not this year...

Having settled that, we paid for the armoire and got it into the car. We verified that the lovely 1910 Edwardian wall mirror we had both fallen in love with on their website wasn't in stock. (Mahogany. Shield-shaped. Same time period as when the house was built. Pretty much perfect!) Too bad, but it does mean we aren't adding yet another step to the project.

Got home and started disassembling the Ikea cabinet; it's in great shape, so we figured Freecycle. And then... having taken it apart into two pieces, we couldn't get either down the stairs. It was just too big to make the turn. So oh well - complete disassembly means destroying the thing. Too bad but we'll just call the city for an oversize trash pickup instead I guess.

Once that was done the wife went for plaster putty to refill the holes where we had bolted the Ikea to the wall. I completely unloaded the 8' bookcase and moved it into its new proper place. Whereupon I discovered that it doesn't quite fit below the 8' picture rail as it did in its first position - the floor is taller on that side of the room. Le sigh. It looks a lot better than the Ikea armoire. Not just because stained wood rather than press-board, but because it is shallower and the room is much more open. Also, I will be able to get at my books where it is now!

We moved the short armoire up and into place. It looks good. And... that's plenty for today.

Next up: bolting the bookcase and both armoires into place. That will require yet more Magic Puzzle movement, but hopefully is something that will only take an evening after work.
