Mar. 16th, 2026 10:24 amWe day-tripped Crown this last weekend.
We normally don't go, because neither of us fights or consorts, and it's usually around the wife's birthday. The event has been moved back a week though, to shift around Gulf Wars. I have strong opinions about moving our events around other kingdoms' events that we are not principals of, so consider that rant renewed. Anyway, with me being Laurel Counselor I thought I probably should set an example.
We left early so we could be there for morning court; a friend had his elevation scheduled. We hit some highway construction traffic and then took a wrong turn that caused us to loop around for 15 minutes, but we got there. The elevation got pushed back to the evening so his family could attend (which is reasonable). I attended Their Majesties for a few hours and then kicked back in our friends' sunshade.
One of the Arts competitions was Bread, and they needed judges, and even if it's not my focus anymore I didn't have a reason to decline. There were five entries, four of which were pretty good.
There was a tourney, one guy won. That is all I have to say about that. The evening martial meetings dragged on (as they generally do) and the rest of our camping group bugged out for dinner. I wanted to stay for the peerage, which was supposed to be early in court. It went well as I judge these things -- there were two speakers, one of whom was succinct and funny, and the other needed an editor to cut her speech down by at least half. There were several points where we thought she was done and then it just continued. Oh well - at least she was reading from a text, so it wasn't incoherent rambling on top of the length.
Once the peerage was done we bugged out, about half an hour behind the others. We ate at a decent Mexican place. I would have ordered a beer, but the server said "We don't serve alcohol, my boss is Christian." Not having a liquor license is okay, but citing the religion as a reason? Who turned water into wine at Cana?
Anyway, we had booked a local hotel so we didn't have to drive back. Good thing as we were both exhausted and crashed early. Sunday the hotel breakfast was predictably uninspiring, so we went to a different Mexican place and had very good food, although more than we usually eat. The drive home was uneventful, thankfully.
All in all we had a decent time and enjoyed chatting with friends.
