Kage Baker, The Anvil of the World

I’ve enjoyed Baker’s Company time-travel/historical fiction series. Her latest book is a stand-alone fantasy (actually three short stories with the same characters). It reads like L. Sprague de Camp and Jack Vance in its world-building and irrelevant descriptions of gourmet feasts; but the people are nicely drawn. Something that Vance was seldom able to do, especially in his later years.

The book is a quick read – it’s fluffy fantasy. I enjoyed it and would read more in this universe. I’d rather she go back to her Company series, but she may have needed a break there as it felt like she wrote herself into a corner...
