#1 on the list of music I least expected to hear on the radio driving in to work this foggy morning:

The Doctor Who theme dance remix.

What I'm reading: Flint and Wentworth, The Course of Empire

Here's an equally impenetrable gaming post.

I've been playing Atari's remake of Pirates! - well, not incessantly, because I've still been showing up to work and I've gotten close-ish to my normal amount of sleep. (I decline to answer any personal questions.) I even turned off the game before dinner last night and didn't go back.

The game rocks.
It keeps the spirit of the old version, which is what made it so addicting in the late '80s. I'm now on my second game - I ended my first one early, because I played on the easy level to get re-acquainted. That was an English pirate named Fletcher Christian. Now I'm playing a Spaniard named... Inigo Montoya, of the Royal War Sloop Prepare to Die. Yes, there is a Dread Pirate Roberts NPC in the game.

So I've figured out more or less how to fire the cannon, maneuver the ship, sack cities and kill pirates.
But not how to dance.

That's the biggest addition from the old game; to impress the governors' daughters, you have to dance to 18th century music. My RL dancing ability... well, let's just say it reflects my genetic heritage. I'm not much better on the computer, although sheer repetition and memorization is starting to help. I've impressed one "very plain" daughter and got a wink from an attractive one. The others all shake their heads and stomp away.

Ah well, I'll try again later today. Until the wife kicks me off so that she can write a paper, anyway. Yet another reason I'll be glad when she graduates.
