Lloyd Alexander, January 30, 1924 - May 17, 2007.

I couldn't tell you how many times I read the Prydain Chronicles growing up. It got to the point that I knew the page formatting. I was already a voracious reader, and books like these did nothing to dissuade me.

When I was about ten, someone donated a coverless set to the local library. They are legally not allowed to keep them so the librarians immediately thought of me. I kept the disintegrating paperback set for many years. Even after learning the much-less-simplified folk stories behind his books, I still enjoyed them.

When Henry Holt reissued the books with their original covers about five years ago, I bought the set. I re-read them in the last two years - they're comfort food.

Rest in Peace.

We're here in our hotel by the Collegium site - seems decent enough, and it's only a mile and a half away. Traffic was abysmal, as one should expect for leaving the Bay Area on a Friday. We left our house at 4 PM; 100 minutes later, we had travelled less than 40 miles. That equates out to 24 MPH. Aargh.

So we bailed off the freeway, ate a passable meal at a rapidly-prepared-chain restaurant (I wasn't in the mood for the brewpub) and then got here about half an hour ago.

Tired now that we're winding down. Much busyness tomorrow. See some of you there.
