We weren't shanghaied
Jul. 26th, 2008 12:09 pmYesterday evening the wife and I visited the Old Ship Saloon - it's a financial district bar that yes, was originally built in a beached ship. It's been a brothel, sailors' boarding house, and various other things in its lifetime. Apparently during one renovation they found a record of shanghaied sailors and how much the bar was paid for each man.
A locals' bar, it's more a beer and wine pub than a cocktail bar. The wife asked for a sidecar and the response was "The bartender doesn't know how to make that. Is it like a Lemon Drop?"
...she had bottled cider instead.
I wouldn't hurry back, but it's an interesting bit of local history.
