Good thing I changed out of the work suit
Aug. 11th, 2009 09:28 amLast night I went to Bloodhound, a bar not that far from our house. It's not my usual style - deliberately downscale and loud - but it's a hangout for Chris Cosentino, the chef at Incanto. He and a number of his chef friends were on hand to watch the San Francisco episode of No Reservations. Since it was an open (but limited) invite, I showed up. Also, we don't have cable so this was the only way I'd be able to see the episode.
Bloodhound serves beers in Mason jars. I tried one of their 20s cocktails: a Jack Rose (applejack, house-made grenadine, and lime juice). Not too sweet and not bad, but one was plenty. The wife is visiting her mom, so I was by myself and I didn't know anyone other than Chris and his wife.
The episode itself: I couldn't hear much of the narration because the bar was loud (and some people not there to watch it complained about the volume, so it was turned down further). But I think the city acquitted itself well. The episode was framed as contrasts: the usual shots of hippies and bums, along with a couple shots of the Ferry Building farmers' market. Political correctness vs. the House of Prime Rib. Locavore cooking vs. the two (non-Japanese) chefs at Sebo, a majority of whose fish is flown in from Japan; I already wanted to try their omikase sushi and this did nothing to discourage it. Chris at Incanto was the penultimate bit and his snout-to-tail dinner looked faboo (I've had his venison tartare, it's lovely). Tony loved everything they served him. One of the dishes was brains and testicles which Chris presented as "Big brain, little brain." In the shot you can see Chris' wife Tatiana shaking her head - I assume she's heard the joke too many times. The episode ended with Tony getting a cheeseburger and Anchor Steam at Red's Java House next to the Ferry Building. Cheap, definitely not gourmet, and he adored it.
Edited to add: Here's another take on it.
