Can I have a do-over?
Oct. 30th, 2009 07:38 amI realized this morning that I had forgotten to make breakfast last night - that is, soak my usual oatmeal. It takes an hour or so, which is time I do not have before I leave the house. So I did without.
At least I remembered my coffee this morning. Walked down the hill to the bus stop, where the indicator said the bus would arrive in five minutes. Five minutes passed. The indicator flipped to 35 minutes. I waited another five-ten minutes, decided the bus wasn't coming, and opened my briefcase to get out the phone so I could call the wife to wake her up for a ride to work.
Which wasn't there. I had taken it out last night and apparently not put it back. So I hiked up the hill to the house... and couldn't find my keys in my briefcase. I hit the doorbell (last resort at 5:50 AM) and the wife, understandably, didn't answer the door. I upended the briefcase and took everything out so I could find the keys. Just as the wife came down the stairs.
I quickly searched but couldn't find the phone. I'll find it when I get home.
A few minutes later we were on the road. I managed to make a couple wrong turns through frustration and had to make an illegal turn to get off Market Street, but at least at this hour there aren't any cops or traffic. Drove to the office to park so I could get out and the wife could go home.
But a maintenance guy waved me off. They are repaving Van Ness and they wouldn't let me down the block. I cursed, swerved across the street, and parked so I could get into work. Late (although I get in before my boss so no one noticed, but it's the principle of the thing).
I should have just pulled the covers over my head and stayed home.
