(no subject)

So, we have a new smooth sidewalk/driveway and backyard pit. The workers came yesterday by 8 AM and were done by 5. It's amazing how quickly they can break up the old (already-broken, and weed-infested) concrete and replace it. We were trapped in our own home for only a day. They didn't even have to compact the ground in the back yard - they dug down less than a foot and hit solid Potrero Hill rock.

I was trying in vain last night to explain to someone how the sidewalk is public space (we had to pay for a permit to infringe it with our door gate) but the city forces us to maintain it at our expense.
