My dream this morning was a sci-fi made-for-TV movie. Feel free to count the tropes.
I was a teenager who was tagging along on a scientific expedition to Mars, along with my dad the appointed political leader (played by William H Macy). We ran into a subterranean (submartian?) ancient city of native Martians, who had built their city underground as a temporary measure thousands of years ago when Mars started losing its atmosphere. I discovered them by chance meeting a socially-awkward Martian teenage orphan of similar age. We instantly became best buddies. He had lost his parents in a disaster - the city had been recycling its materials so long that it was running low on crucial elements. Said elements being commonly available to Earthlings, of course.
However, my dad didn't want to help, because it would divert our resources and if they died out the real estate would be available. It was less cold-blooded than that but that was the thrust. The Martian teenager was under pressure in his work apprenticeship to go along with lowering manufacturing safety standards to ease resource usage; this practice had led to the disaster where his parents died. He went along for a while in Act II and became popular for the first time. Meanwhile I was trying to drum up support for helping them and becoming more isolated among the Earthers.
Eventually in Act III everything is resolved happily as the Martian and I hijack a shuttle somehow to redirect a local asteroid to Mars' surface, or something, to provide enough elements for the Martian city to survive. We all Learn A Valuable Lesson.
What I'm Reading: Robin Hobb, City of Dragons
