I called Hyatt to tell them that my father-in-law will not be accepting their offer of a weekend getaway, because he died some years ago. The representative making small talk mentioned that he had "the same thing happen on another call last week."

Yeah, that inspires confidence in their marketing.

An unpleasant discovery today when I pulled out my starter: it had gone off.

By which I mean there was an orange-colored coating on the top, and what looked like mold around the edge of the crock. Maybe it's not toxic, but it's clearly gotten contaminated and I'm not trusting it. I dumped the whole thing and the crock is getting thoroughly sterilized several times before re-use.

This is why you always have a backup. A few years back I dried out some starter, vacuum-sealed it, and stuck the resulting white powder in the freezer. Helpfully labelled "Not Anthrax".
