"Calving" is when a piece of a glacier breaks off and separates.
That also describes the feeling when my calf seizes up at 1 AM and locks into place. I am usually pretty good about immediately stretching when the process starts so it doesn't turn into a knotted bulge. But not last night. It still hurts today.
