My phone is a few years old and a few models behind. It's fine though; I really don't need a larger/newer one. Work would pay for it, but since I'm a partner I see how spending $700-$1k impacts our profits. I just don't need to replace it.
A few months back the screen cracked. "That's it, I need a new phone" I thought. It turned out the thin screen cover had cracked (doing its job). We replaced it and boom, problem solved.
Last week the battery hit critical. It would go from 100% charged (actually 89%, according to the system) to less than 10% in half an hour. Not feasible to continue. This time I didn't debate over a new phone; I went to the maker's store to get a battery replacement.
That was a mistake. They have a business model like a hip nightclub: wide open spaces, no counters, lots of "salespeople" milling around but you have to accost them to get service. Then they decide if you are worthy of your time (which of course, I am not). They have been extremely successful with this model - but clearly I am not that target audience. After being shunted to the third person, and being told "We'll put you on a wait list and text you when someone is available", I said "Forget this". I was thinking something much more profane, but I was in public and thenightclub doorman / customer service person / whatever the title is doesn't control the policy and didn't deserve my direct ire.
At the nearby mall, a kiosk vendor replaced the battery for me in about 35 minutes. Cost was minimal. Yes, it probably voids their warranty because the company wants to charge you 10x as much to do the same thing. Guess what: old phone is out of warranty anyway. And this morning, my phone was at 98% after being on overnight.
