This week's Lockdown Takeout Review: El Metate.
This is a fairly standard Mexican place near us. On the Chinese restaurant correlation scale of tacky appearance = quality, it definitely promises high quality.

We had chile relleno plates. Chile rellenos are a tough bar to meet for restaurants: they are best served right out of the deep-frier, and the best are time-consuming to prepare and don't scale or keep well. I haven't found a restaurant that produces a really good relleno since a hole-in-the-wall place in Mountain View in the mid '90s. I've had El Metate's chile relleno before so I knew what I was getting.

What worked: It was at the quality level I expected - better than average.

What didn't: It didn't meet my high standard.

Will we visit again? For standard Mexican food, this is still a good local restaurant, so probably. Any suggestions for places with standout chile rellenos are cheerfully accepted though.

On a side note, I think we may wrap up takeouts next week. I haven't been inspired for the last several, and while restaurants still need the help I think this has run its course for us. Also we don't normally spend this much on restaurants and our budget needs a break.
