Feb. 22nd, 2007 07:20 amWe got our chimneys cleaned and inspected yesterday. It seemed appropriate that we scheduled it for Ash Wednesday.
We are now the owners of two clean, but nonfunctional chimneys. This isn't a huge surprise although it is disappointing. Our chimney has mortar coming out of it and the upstairs neighbors' has cracked tiles. I suspect that no work has been done on them since the house was moved in the '50s; to make them fire-safe, we'd essentially have to have them torn out and rebuilt. So, that's not happening.
Maybe in a year or so
bonacorsi and I will put a gas-burning insert in ours. Less satisfying than a functional wood-burning fireplace, but probably a bit better for resale value than a nonfunctional one.

Date: 2007-02-22 05:09 pm (UTC)Granted, it's not cheap, but it's certainly cheaper than having the chimney remade.
I got pricing on 'em when we were considering replacing our gas furnace; we ended up not doing it, but it's a common thing.
