I had my follow-up dental visit yesterday.
Teeth? Still fine. Never had a cavity in my whole life.
My gums, though...

They want to schedule a "scalar planing" which is basically a hard-core cleaning. One side at a time, with anesthetic. Then cleanings every three months (instead of six).

The only time I've had dental issues was getting wisdom teeth out. Somehow this just doesn't seem fair.

Yow. That does NOT sound like fun. I remember the spouse had to do that years ago. I had the sonic cleaning, and that seems to have taken care of things since (well, generally taking better care of my teeth and doing the twice a year cleanings/exams of course ...). But even that's not all that fun (and took two times, one for each side of my face).

Now, J., you know that life is not fair ... just take it like ... oh, never mind. <g>

I had that done, and really? the shots were the worst of it. translation, not that big a deal all things considered :)

and as someone with major peridontal issues, my sonicare toothbrush saved my butt. really! its loud and silly but egads it works.

good luck!

I've been using a sonicare toothbrush for several years now.
Good to hear that you didn't find the planing a big deal. (I have mental images of belt sanders...)

I made into my thirties before I had to have much of anything done other than cleanings. My gums needed the same thing - once. It wasn't that bad, but I have a high pain threshold, so YMMV.

You'll be very good about flossing after this. Maybe even carrying a toothpick to run around your gums after eating.

Mmmm, the taste of your own blood....

oh dont get me wrong. its not as much fun as a lot of other things I can think of, but given the range of bad mouth foo, its just the same as an intense cleaning (and they've numbed you so you dont even have them accidentally poking you) :)

My mother has the same thing -- great teeth, lousy gums. I've only had four cavities, but I did have a skin graft done on my gums.

The scalar planing isn't too bad... you're sore for a few days after. I'm another good teeth person.. and I only have to go in for cleanings every 12 months now that the planing has corrected inflammations...
