As it is, there are more Democrats here so sometimes I appear to tilt Republican. For the record, I'm not aligned with either party.

I completely agree with the Democratic talking heads and (some of my friends) who have said that McCain's choice of Palin is condescending to women - if the GOP expects women to blindly vote for them based on gender.

By the same token, it's equally condescending to expect minorities to vote Democratic because there's a non-white male on the ticket.

Do the research and vote for a ticket that most closely aligns with your priorities and beliefs, not because of gender/race/attractiveness/height/etc.
Think for yourself, schmuck!

That's what I finally did, when I realized that I was partially disenfranchising myself by being an independent.

Now I vote for the person who comes closest to what I want and hope it helps. I believe in evolution of candidates -- keep trying to turn them in your direction and maybe one day there will be a good one. If you don't vote at all, all you are doing is letting the worse candidate win.

It horrifies me to hear people say that they refuse to vote at all because there isn't a totally satisfactory candidate.

Sad, but true, but there are certainly worse ways of running a country, so I'll happily take what we've got and do my best to make it better!

I really don't think McCain believes that Palin would be appealing to the angry Hilary fans out there. I'm interested to hear what she has to say about issues, as opposed to what the various media say she believes... and the spin is already flying pretty thick.

I think she has a pretty good qualification already: she's been on the public payroll less than any of the others.

TFY is certainly unarguable (though I don't know what jewelry has to do with it). But I think it's a mistake to "vote for a ticket that most closely aligns with your priorities and beliefs" - in fact it is just that which has made things such a mess. I'd say rather, vote for a ticket that you think has the best chance of governing well. The Republican Party ticket actually appears to align better with many of my priorities and beliefs; but their performance over the past two decades has made it clear that they are unfit to govern (as even David Brooks admits). It's also clear that there is virtually no connection between what the party claims to be about, and what they will actually do if given power.

Certainly gender and race have absolutely nothing to do with any of this. Too bad those are the factors that will probably decide the outcome...

Fair enough.

Modify it to "vote for a ticket that you think will perform closest to your priorities and beliefs."

Either way, you are thinking about it rather than blindly lever-pulling by reflex.
