Galen was fixed when he was a very young kitten. Before he adopted us. That was over six years ago. (Not 42, as the vet's records indicate.)
So who or what was he serenading last night at 2 AM? Sheesh. Damn cat wouldn't shut up.

Some cats will "kill" a toy or bug and then use the "come here and let me show you my kill/train you to kill" yowl to let their "kittens" (i.e. owners) know what is going on.

Aurora sometimes does that. She's 18.

Buddy was fixed when he was six months old, and he'd wail at 2am almost every night. He got stressed out when nobody paid attention to him and let us know about it.

Instincts are strong!
My male dog was "fixed" at 8 months. The female at about 12 months. They never knew each other in the un-neutered state, and yet He still tries to mount her from time to time when they are rough-housing.

With dogs, mounting behavior can also be used in dominance games (i.e. who is the alpha dog). This is Yet Another Reason to not let dogs jump up on you.
