After a short "Marco! Polo!" with cell phones, I met the wife on Market and we walked up to Union Square. I wanted to try Neiman Marcus' popovers with strawberry butter, and I really didn't want to get anywhere near the shopping district on Friday.

The Rotunda is a nice place to have tea. It's not the elegance you'd get on Nob Hill, although that's clearly what they're shooting for. The wife did have tea and I opted for coffee.
We didn't know that the popovers are 1) a lunch item - we asked the server and he brought some out though; and 2) free, in place of bread and butter. Oops. I gave him a nice tip to make up for it.

Fud: The popovers were no better, although certainly no worse, than ones I've made. The strawberry butter was quite nice. I might have to try making that... I think it would just be grinding strawberries, letting them drain a bit, and then mixing it into soft butter and re-freezing in shape.

Price: Free. Everything else on the menu is expensive.

Atmosphere: elegant and a nice view of the rotunda and Union Square.
Will I go back? Probably not. If I feel like doing that sort of thing I'm more likely to go to Nob Hill.

Ah, that brings back good memories. My brother Michael took me to lunch in the rotunda for my 16th birthday, then took dowstairs and bought me a new dress and even helped pick out some accessories. And yet, it still took my parents another 3 years to figure out he's gay... ;-)
