Apparently I'm 7x7ing for Thanksgiving
Nov. 25th, 2009 08:42 amAfter a short "Marco! Polo!" with cell phones, I met the wife on Market and we walked up to Union Square. I wanted to try Neiman Marcus' popovers with strawberry butter, and I really didn't want to get anywhere near the shopping district on Friday.
The Rotunda is a nice place to have tea. It's not the elegance you'd get on Nob Hill, although that's clearly what they're shooting for. The wife did have tea and I opted for coffee.
We didn't know that the popovers are 1) a lunch item - we asked the server and he brought some out though; and 2) free, in place of bread and butter. Oops. I gave him a nice tip to make up for it.
Fud: The popovers were no better, although certainly no worse, than ones I've made. The strawberry butter was quite nice. I might have to try making that... I think it would just be grinding strawberries, letting them drain a bit, and then mixing it into soft butter and re-freezing in shape.
Price: Free. Everything else on the menu is expensive.
Atmosphere: elegant and a nice view of the rotunda and Union Square.
Will I go back? Probably not. If I feel like doing that sort of thing I'm more likely to go to Nob Hill.
