If my typing is a bit off over the next week or so, it's because I sliced off a chunk of my thumb Saturday.

Nothing too major - just took a piece out of the ball. It's bandaged up and it will heal eventually. I bled like a stuck pig, though. Amazing how difficult it is to do things wihtout a thumb, even when it's on the non-dominant hand...

Ack! How did you come to do this? My grandmother had a run in with a jicama a few weeks back and came away the worse for it with a very similar injury.

Heal, and be careful with yourself.

how?

The usual way. I was chopping an onion for our Saturday breakfast pesto scramble, and... chunk. One extra bit of meat to go into the mix, order up!

The usual way? One should know do this sort of thing often enough to have a "usual way".

This was a more extreme version of the not-uncommon "chop chop -ouch".

Usually it's just a nick rather than a full-on gouge.

When I lived in Japan, I managed to slice off the tip of my middle finger about 3 times while chopping cabbage. After that, my roommate wouldn't let me use the handy-dandy insta-chopper thang anymore.

But yeah. OUCH.

(edited to correct size of wound)

The night before I was due to fly to France for a semester, I took a 1/2" chunk out of the same thumb. With a wire cheese slicer.

It made for a most uncomfortable flight - as well as trying to juggle three bags, since wheeled luggage hadn't made many inroads.

I don't use that style of cheese slicer anymore.
