This week's Lockdown Takeout Review: Marcella's.
This is a local lasagneria owned by an elderly Italian man who loves what he does - make lasagna. (Along with a few related items like ravioli.) His son runs the place. We've been there a few times and have always enjoyed it. When we started doing weekly takeouts, this was my first suggestion; unfortunately, they closed that week. Since then I've been occasionally stalking their webpage. When they announced they were open for limited takeout hours (I think the son made Marcella stay home though), I made them my next choice.
The difficulty was deciding. I love their white pancetta lasagna. The wife leaned towards the butternut squash or the mushroom. We could have gotten three servings, one of each; but that would have cost about the same as one pan. Ultimately we went with a pan of the mushroom.
What worked: Pickup was easy. I chatted briefly with the son, emphasizing that we are local repeat customers and how glad we were that they were able to re-open. Because that's part of what this is all about - helping the places we like survive.
The lasagna was, as always, excellent; far better than any I have been able to make. The pan was six generous servings, so last night was dinner with salad, we are having it for lunch today, and the remaining two will go into the freezer for later.
What didn't: I was quite happy with it.
Will we visit again? We don't go that often, but yes. Under normal circumstances it's a nice Friday lunch outing.
