I took today off work. The plan was to go for a hike in a local open space preserve.

Instead, we took Hilde to the emergency vet because she had thrown up a couple times and was listless. It turns out she has a fever. More importantly, she is FLV-positive. Which - since it spreads through "prolonged saliva contact" - means we will have to get Bea tested, but it's a good assumption she'll turn up positive as well. Even if she didn't I don't think we'd want to re-home her.

They'll both go in for tests in about six weeks. At that point we'll see. They may have shorter lives, they may not. Either way we will love them as long as we can.

Hugs. I went through something similar with Mal and Wash of beloved memory. I don't know what the diagnosis means health wise, but if there is a threat of high vet bills would it make sense to get Bea insured now, before the diagnosis? That's what we did with Wash and it really helped as his care got very expensive.

Love them as long as you have them. Months to years, we never really know.

Feline Leukemia can mean a dramatically shortened life (down to a few years). In about a third of the cases it can be mostly asymptomatic and just keeping them indoors and away from other cats (which was generally the plan anyway).

Oh, dear, my condolences for the worry you have to go through now, and my hopes that she is one of the lucky ones who is mostly asymptomatic and gets a reasonably long (by cat standards) and fun life.

Oh no. I think I've been following this on FB so I know how the tests turned out, but still. I hope you're able to love them both for a very long time indeed.

Beatrice is negative and has been vaccinated. We have to get Hildegarde re-tested in five weeks. If she's negative then, it's dormant and she'll be basically unaffected. If she's positive then we may have less time with her. Possibly much less.
