Today I mailed off a large check to pay off some debt.
Not a glamourous use of inherited cash. Responsible, yes. Fun, no.

Sometimes being an adult sucks.

But at least you might be able to have fun later with the debt off of your shoulders.

I find that mailing off a large check to pay off debt is fun in the feeling of lightness I get afterwards. Of course, this works best with final payments -- the middle installments, even if large, end up leaving me feeling sort of empty.

Glamour vs practicality

Knocking a chunk off of indebtedness surely isn't exciting, but it certainly is relieving to make a big payment against principal, or even half and half. The amount of interest going down is very satisfying. Watching my interest payment go down one or two pennies every month because I pay a (relatively) miniscule $50 extra per mortgage payment is remarkably gratifying.

So, today you are a Congratulations!

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words and encouragement. I work in the financial industry, so I'm well acquainted with the power of compounding and why It Makes Sense to pay off mortgages early. That's why we sent the check to pay off the equity line.

Intellectually, I understand.
The inner seven-year-old is still screaming "But I want a pony!"

Yeah, but think how much it would suck to have all that debt still hanging over your head ... it's frustrating at times, yes, but (and I know you are well aware of the need for fiscal responsibility, and are far from a poster child for non-responsible finances) in the long run, it's probably better this way.

But you'd hurt yourself on the torpedo bra every time you hugged her.

Poor wookums. Maybe someday if you save enough money you can have a pony ... (GD&R)

Ponies are cheap! Got Tiffany for only $350, but oh, the shipping cost.... as well as maintenance, vet bills (it helps that I am one), farrier bills, etc.

If I were your banker I would give you a cookie. Also a discount on fees to increase your credit line.
