The potluck was quite good, overall. Despite a cow-orker's kvetching that he spent $50 on pizza. Dude, then don't buy pizza! Quite a bit of variety in the homemade things I tried - Carolina pulled pork barbecue, curried potatoes, Filipino-style cashews, baklava...

About 2/3 of the pecan pie is left. I did get some compliments from a few cow-orkers. The pie took much longer to set than it should have, so the crust was a bit crispier than I would have liked. Oh well; I'll have to improve by next week. The filling came about just about perfect for my taste, though. Not too dry and not too sweet.

(slight sigh) I don't feel snubbed the way I did last year, but I don't feel fulfilled either. I guess that's about all I can realistically hope for.

Edited to add: vultures came back later, so about 2/3 of the pie is gone now. That makes me feel better.

Sounds pretty good for a potluck!

Up here on Middle Ridge we have a monthly neighborhood potluck. The food is consistently good, sometimes great; best potlucks I've ever seen. The owner of the Mendocino Cafe used to live just up the road (until she lost her driver's license after a DUI collision) and for a while her new chef was living nearby as well. Some really impressive platters at the potlucks! Maybe I should take notes, write a little review every month...

Don't you just hate that you cannot bring something you bought at a store to settle the natives? It just goes against evey fiber in your body doesn't it?
Mass processed food-like products are just icky!!!

On the other hand ... the first Laurel meeting he was at after he was named a member of the order, lots of folk got to him and told him that it was expected that the "baby Laurel" provide breakfast. Many people anticipated something really yummy.

Just to be contrary ([livejournal.com profile] madbaker? Contrary? Naw ... never!) he brought a couple (store bought) packages of cheap breakfast rolls. (The sweet kind that are really not very good ...) It was funny, but not as many folk noticed because another "baby Laurel" bought the whole concept lock, stock and barrel and there was a table full o'food ...

Um, well...

Here's how I remember it:

I brought a package of danishes, still in the plastic. 'Cause, you know, get a Laurel, stop doing what you got it for.

Gabriel (Queen at the time) looked at me, and (clearly not buying it) said "Where's the real one?"
At which point I pulled out the bowl of period sourdoughnuts that I had made that AM. Siobhan M was also there for the first time, and brought a jar of baby food since she was actually the baby food Laurel.

Yeah...dessert often has to wait for the after-vultching, one the initial trough-like feeding has settled. Not that I would *ever* compare your cow-orkers to swine, and your cooking to pearls. Really.
(pecan pie. Yum! even if only a bite...)

Recipe?
