My divisible-by-five birthday was fine. Not a production but most of the time my introvert self doesn't want one.
We went out for dinner Saturday; I chose a high-end NY-style steakhouse to be different. The atmosphere was exactly what we wanted - classic, okay yes pop music soundtrack but background so we didn't have to yell over it to talk, attentive servers. Our cocktails were good. (I wasn't in the mood for a martini, and I can easily make Negronis at home. So I had a Vieux Carre which was in the neighborhood of what my brain wanted; it wasn't too heavy on the cognac, so it tasted of rye.) We had crab cakes as an appetizer which were perfect. The wife's filet mignon was presumably sous vide cooked and was beautifully medium-rare. My bone-in filet was... sadly medium in most parts. But it wasn't tough so I still enjoyed it. And they comped us a birthday dessert, so I still tipped appropriately. It was nice to dress up in a suit and tie in an environment where that mattered.
The actual birthday was a quiet Sunday. I took myself out for breakfast, which was tasty but not totally satisfying. The restaurant has fully embraced phone QR ordering to reduce staffing and among other things, that meant that they only served me one large mug of coffee. I like my hot beverages scalding, thank you very much, and a large mug loses thermal integrity quicker than I choose to drink it. But the food was good.
A bit later I tried a neighborhood bar for the anniversary of Irish coffee. They didn't have hot coffee, and I should have just left, but I didn't - so I got a slightly boozy cafe latte, which was completely unsatisfying.
I didn't feel the need to cancel our weekly HOA meeting even though it was our week; I made a apple cake for dessert that the wife put a single candle on. (Recipe hint from experience: butter the tin heavily, using butter rather than a spray oil, and the breadcrumbs are required to avoid sticking to the tin.) The cake was good and we will enjoy leftovers with tea this week.
I walked over to a different neighborhood bar this morning to try for Irish coffee again. This time, they made coffee - but then it was served lukewarm, with cream mixed in rather than whipped on top. Nice whiskey content but otherwise still unsatisfying. I think I am going to hit an Irish pub near work on Wednesday, dammit.
I am taking today off from work. I had mulled going for a hike in an open space preserve, but it's raining today so I'm just going to stay home and read. Hopefully Miss Beatrice will want a blanket fort.
