Jack Chalker: To emasculate one character, change the sex of another, and turn all the other characters into alien bodies. Oh, and have computers run everything.
Terry Goodkind: To torture the main characters incessantly, only stopping the torment temporarily to harangue the reader with political screeds.
Mercedes Lackey: To drain any possibility of moral complexity or character development by having the heroes always doing good things for good reasons, and villains doing bad actions for evil motives.
