On Election Day, a rare political post.
Nov. 4th, 2025 06:46 amMy ideal redistricting would be done (only) decennially and to conform with maximum district compactness. Party-blind, race-blind, and the most egalitarian representation. Also mathematically verifiable which theoretically would combat partisan gerrymandering.
Will it ever happen? No. It's not a perfect system, although I think it's the best choice that is practical. There is no agreed-on formula for compactness, which opens the door to more fiddling for partisan advantage. People would scream about cities and counties being broken up. It would probably require a ruling stating that it does not violate the Voting Rights Act - which would immediately trigger accusations of disenfranchising minorities.
But most importantly, it will never happen because it benefits nobody in power.
