What I did on our Spring Vacation
Apr. 10th, 2005 03:32 pmThe wife and I spent three nights in the Mendocino area. We stayed at The Coast Guard Inn, which (just as it sounds) is a converted Coast Guard station. We got exactly what we wanted - a nice place out in the middle of relatively nowhere, so we could recharge a bit.
We started by driving to Muir Woods and having a bit of a hike, then continued up Highway 1. The weather was absolutely gorgeous.
We wandered around a locals-only beach and went up the Point Arena Lighthouse.
Then we had a nice dinner with
albionwood and
loupnoir. Much chattage, good food, and we got to tour their property. It's a nice place, although I think the wife and I are still too Bay Area to want to move there.
The last day we wandered around Mendocino proper. It's quite arty.
Much cool art and other neat things, but we didn't buy anything - until late in the day, when we found a hat store. Oops. The wife bought a knitted wool cap and I got a fedora-style Stetson. Well, Indiana Jones really. It's a bit heavier weight than the vintage fedora, so now I have a "town" hat and an "outdoor" hat.
We had hoped to have our anniversary dinner at The Victorian Gardens, but they weren't open on Thursdays. Oh well, perhaps another time. We went to the Albion River Inn instead at T&K's recommendation. It was very nice and the view was faboo. There was an annoying woman all the way across the room who talked loudly enough to include us in her conversation - we actually said something to the server, who made sure to bring her food out, which quieted her down nicely.
Then a leisurely drive back. I'm reasonably recharged, which was the point, really.
