Irony.

I'm going to see Revenge of the Sith next Thursday.
At a private screening. One of the brokers I deal with did this for the last several Harry Potter movies too.

I'm doing this not because I'm a huge fan. I was. My faith was tested severely by Ewoks and A Wookie Christmas. Then came "Ani" and Jar-Jar, and well... I gave up.

So why am I going to the early screening, if I'm not a fan?
Because I want to see the movie for completeness' sake.

The irony, of course, is that I know several people who would give their left nut/ovary for this opportunity. Me, I'm going because this way I don't actually have to give Lucas any money.

Only problem: Kevin Smith, despite his later evisceration of Lucas (see: Clerks: The Animated Series, although you could argue that was coming from Randal's mouth, not Smith's directly), LIKED the Phantom Menace, so despite his usually excellent deconstruction of all things from a Galaxy Far Far Away, I find his opinion a bit suspect. Here's the 1999 review he gave on his own website: http://www.viewaskew.com/press/menace.html

OTOH he does say he went into it with low expectations, but to say "...But the long and short of it is that I liked it - quite a bit. I'd rank it right after 'Empire' in a list of fave 'Star Wars' flicks. It starts great, ends great, and has great stuff sprinkled in between."?

On the plus side, there have a been a few other positive early reports, so while I'm not expecting a miracle, I at least think that I won't come out of a matinee thinking that I'd wasted my time and money. Maybe it'll be better than the Hitchhiker's movie, which I'd give a C+, but that's a whole other post...
