I suppose that could fall under "string-like objects", but he's actually gotten less interested in them over the last year.

Nah, rubber bands go through a cat without much problem. I've been there, cleaned the litterbox. It's actual string, or thread, more than a few inches long, which is the big problem. Sewing thread, for example, can seriously injure a cat internally.
