The Crushing Weight of Fatigue
Jun. 27th, 2005 10:20 amSo Tired.
Make that Exhausted.
Crown was good. The 15th c. feast we did went off stunningly. Too much good food, and the helmeted cock riding the roast pygge was spectacular, in all the meanings of that word. All the work that everybody did paid off. I was very happy with how my fine manchet baked up, and the baker's mark came out beautifully.
There were things that we could do better; next time we'll know how to correct those. Like my math error - eight batches of bread for trenchers makes 32 small loaves. Which then get cut in half to make 64. Duh.
(pauses for a minute to wipe off tears of hilarity)
Yeah, right. Not in the next year, bucko. My shoulders hurt from ten batches of bread in less than a week.
The feast made things odd, though. Camping with a much larger group than I prefer to (although we would have ended up spending time hanging out with them anyway); not actually having any real schmooze time outside our campsite; completely ignoring court and the main event. Well, we tend to do some of that anyway lately, I suppose.
Driving the Highlander was also odd, but good. While we didn't have rear view mirror room, we did have more than sufficient room for all our stuff. And I was able to pass somebody while driving uphill; with the gutless Saturn overloaded, I always erred on the side of caution.
I'm glad I took today off for laundry, dishes, and shopping. I'm mentally fried today.

Date: 2005-06-27 06:17 pm (UTC)The camp was a bit disconcerting in size, but still, it worked, and I think we managed to avoid killing anyone, or getting in each others' faces, making things uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to do that size camp for every event, but it did work (which I think was largely due to the specific combination of people as much as anything).
Anyway, good job, to everyone. It was really good, and Tangwystyl had a great time, which you could see if you just looked at her face. She was a bit embarassed to be the center of attention but really enjoyed it.

Date: 2005-06-27 09:27 pm (UTC)Just Couldn't imagine going to Sac in June. Almost too warm here at times. Would have melted and been very, very grouchy.

Date: 2005-06-27 10:57 pm (UTC)We set up a courtyard of the medieval pavilions with the DE at one end, and the non-period tents were hidden from sight from the courtyard. Some cloths across the DE allowed people to move in and out, but hide the parking lot from view ... In the courtyard we set up the tables, with a cloth of estate behind the high table. The cooking was done in the DE and the barbeque pit/table that was on the site when we got there.
It was pretty astounding.

Date: 2005-06-27 11:00 pm (UTC)While really warm, the weather was better than expected, and a cold/cool breeze (not really a wind, although it came close at times) came through and helped a lot, and was there all three days ...
