No, is too much. Let me sum up.
Aug. 29th, 2005 11:01 amSound bites of the Chicago trip...
We flew in Thursday, and found the bed & breakfast with a minimum of fuss. Nice brownstone, although it's really meant for business travelers - the B&B's I've been to in the past are more "guest in the house" affairs, where here we were in one of seven separate flats and no contact with anyone. Nice, centrally located and all, but I'd try other ones in the area before going back. (I'd recommend them, however.) Dinner at Giordano's Pizza. Stuffed, of course. Tasty, although I prefer the Bay Area variety.
We spent a few hours at the Lincoln Park Zoo. It wasn't too hot, but the humidity was a bit much for these CA thin-blooded types. The bears were neat, although we couldn't spot the wolves. (They were located in the screaming kids' area, so wisely hiding.)
Then to a Cubs' game. This year I'm used to the home team losing so no shockers there. Wrigley was great. Though the claustrophobic concessions (and the urinal troughs) reminded me of Candlestick Park in the '70s, and that's not in a good way. Dinner at a dive-y former speakeasy - decent ribs, even if I prefer the flavor of smoked meat.
Most of the day we rambled through the Art Institute. I would have liked to visit Sue the T. Rex at the Field Museum, but we only had enough brain space for one museum. We had a good time discoursing learnedly about the paintings and their composition, to the point that we noticed other people listening in and re-assessing the works. Heh. A liberal arts degree is useful sometimes.
The biggest gripe, though - most of the places we visited were exceedingly poorly laid out. And ill-marked. In both the zoo and the museum, it was nigh-impossible to get from Point A to Point B, especially if trying to use the maps (none of which said You Are Here in large friendly letters). It's not that difficult; the Met in NY and the Louvre are very good about directing people, and they aren't particularly well laid out either. Le sigh.
Oh, and this is the second consecutive time I've lugged my work-issued laptop on a plane and been unable to use it. This time, because it doesn't have Wi-Fi and that's all the B&B had. Le double sigh.
It was a fun short trip. Back to work now.
