To clear up the cryptic entry, here's what happened as best as I can determine.

We came back from an SCA event Sunday. I parked the car on the street, as I almost always do; it was nose-out as we'd been unloading.
Someone crunched the passenger-side bumper/fender during the night - he or she was trying to park in a tight spot, or turn around, or something. I didn't notice until yesterday afternoon, because, well, I leave before it gets light. Also, with the way the car was turned I didn't walk around its front.

I've talked to the insurance people. Scheduled an appointment with a local body shop for Thursday. Haven't bothered to tell the cops, because they have better things to do in San Francisco.

The car isn't seriously damaged as far as I can tell with a cursory inspection, and believe me there was much cursing involved. I've put less than 6K on this beast so far, and this happens.

Oh well, life in the big city I guess.

I hear you can install High-voltage electric-chair-type devices that will destroy other vehicles' electrical systems should your car be 'crunched' while unattended. It works only on low-resistance items like metal (as in 'other vehicles') rather than high-resistance items like 'people'.

Or, if there isn't, there *should* be.

Well, shit. I hate irresponsible people that do damage like that and don't take the credit for it, etc. (Example: my first ever accident while commuting, the guy who caused the accident said to me in person "I fell asleep at the wheel." But when he talked to the police he told a totally different story ... and of course he defaulted on contacting the insurance folk, so I had to wait six months for the insurance to pay off ...)

Contact the police. They have a form for you to fill out, then you (and they) can forget about it. But at least you'll have paperwork. And that's always good to have on your side.

And, hey, it had to happen sometime. At least it wasn't while anyone was in the car, nor anything serious, nor was it a break-in. Could have been much worse.

But, yeah, it still sucks.

Oh! That seriously sucks chunks. Definitely take photos just for documentation. The idea of filing with cops also isn't a bad idea -- for more documentation.

*hugs*

How infuriating. I'm sorry it happened.
