Bookishness
Dec. 15th, 2004 09:09 amI like Tad Williams' style when he's on. Of his recent works, I really enjoyed War of the Flowers. Otherland, however -- well, it picked up nicely in the last two books, but an editor cutting out 60 to 75% would have improved it immensely. These days, I'm not willing to buy his books on spec. I check them out from the library, and then if I feel I'm going to re-read them, maybe I'll plunk down the cash. (That applies to almost all authors now... Lois McMaster Bujold and Tim Powers are among the exceptions.)
Monday I started his most recent opus, Shadowmarch. Then gave up after a few chapters - it just wasn't resonating.
Yesterday, I received a birthday present in the mail from my dad. Yup, you guessed it: Shadowmarch. Well, at least this way I'm forced to try again. Maybe I'll get into it the next time.
What I'm reading: Neil Gaiman, 1602
