Parade Madness
Nov. 5th, 2010 02:16 pmWith my boss' knowledge and consent, I called in sick Wednesday with orange-and-black fever. I actually got up an hour early so I could get a couple hours' worth of work done first. With that I didn't get to City Hall until around 8:30 AM - and it was already packed for a parade that wasn't due to start until 11:00. I found a spot that seemed reasonable and stood there.
And stood there. And realized that I forgot sunscreen. I had sent Y&B a message about meeting them, but they didn't have my number and the cell reception at the main area crashed under the load of people so I didn't get their response. It got more and more packed, warmer, and some of the guys next to me got drunker and drunker. (Not so pleasant.)
Eventually the parade started and they showed it on a video screen. The speakers were completely insufficient so we couldn't hear anything; fortunately, they were somewhat louder when the players actually arrived, around 12:30 or so. I hung around during most of the ceremony but bailed before the very end because I was hot, had sore legs, and needed to do some more work at home. My bus was cancelled because of the street closures, but I didn't realize this until I'd waited for a while.
All in all, not the spectacular rallying fun I had hoped to have. But it was absolutely worth going to and I would have regretted it had I not. At least I can point to the overhead crowd shots (they estimate maybe a million people total, more than the population of SF) and say "I was in there. Somewhere.")
I probably won't do it next time though... assuming they repeat in the next 50 years. This time was special.
