Pet names are usually themed, like the radio telescopes series, or the obscure dictionary words series. But I don't make nicknames for them. I don't use nicknames for the kids either.
I don't know if things such as "Handsome boy," "Little girl," "Skitty Kitty," and "Snugglebutt" used interchangeably (well, not for the girl, clearly) are nicknames, but if so, then they sort of start with affectionate "love talk" and tend toward attributes or appearance. "Fat cat" is clearly appearance, where as things like "Drakester" are made from the cat's formal name. And "Snugglebutt," "Skitty kitty," and "Welcome Cat" all come from behaviors.
"FuzzFace", "FuzzyButt" or just "Fuzz" are obviously for physical characteristics (He's a long hair). "Moo" is for the sound he sometimes makes. One of my larger male friends calls his cat "MeowsieButt". This cracks me up every time I hear it.
Most are from their names: Harri is "Harri-man" and "Scary Harri," Patrick is "Trick," "Tricky" and "Trickidee," Tessie is "Tessie-Tess," and Kylie gets "Kylie-Koh." But Patrick is also "Me-Too" because if you call any cat, he comes running, and both he and Kylie are called "Chowhound." Harri gets "Old Man" these days, too.
Thing is...do you sing to your cats? Harri gets "Harriman" (to the tune of Lollipop) and "Harri" (to the tune of Sherry by the 4 Seasons). He also gets "Squirecat" but that's a different whole thing. Patrick gets "Patrick" (to the tune of the theme from Flipper), Tessie, of course, gets "Tessie" by the Dropkick Murphys, and Kylie gets "Kylie-koh-ko" to the tune of La Cucaracha.
I have given then quite a few names sadly. But usually ones they deserve I think. Meep gets called: Dumb Ass, The Fucking Piss Master 2005 (I usually add "you need to die soon" along with that name) Meepers, and My Little Retard. Elli gets called: Elli-mellie, My Big Fatso (I usually start singing Big Girls Don't Cry at her), Bitch, Dork. I wonder if they do have a complex by now? Man, after reading this boy am I going to screw up my kids!
Nicknames for the cats range all over the place here. Name (Rebie-beebie, Zooter the Zootarian ...), behavior (bozo, bozo-beast, butthead ...), appearance (fuzz-butt), and so on. I think largely it's based on how we're feeling at the moment. <g>
Heh. My cats get combinations of name and species: Sasha-kitty, Cody-cat. But then they also have nicknames based upon behavior - Cody is FastCat and Sasha is SlowCat and also Mrs. Cat and Princess and FluffyBum and CrazyCat.
My husband also invents songs to sing to them - mostly it's Sasha that inspires the songwriting, she has 3 or 4 songs of her own, possibly more that he hasn't sung when I'm around. I know of at least 2 that he forgot the words to before he could perform them for me.
#1 -- Slutkitty (for Rasputin), Possumkitty (Jareth) #2 -- Gremmykins (for Gremlin), Aurorable (for Aurora) #3 -- Furbeastie, fuzz-monster/ball/nugget (for all of the cats) #4 -- Slutkitty (Rasputin), Possumkitty (Jareth) since he sometimes holds his mouth open showing all those sharp teeth...
