A pattern has developed in recent weeks:

  1. I go to bed. Galen sometimes curls up around my legs.
  2. An hour or two later, I am awakened by Galen thrashing around the bedroom. Sometimes tipping over things on the dresser, sometimes clawing at the window - but always enough to wake me and prevent me from getting back to sleep.
  3. I throw him out of the bedroom and close the door.  The wife then has to entertain him until she comes to bed.
I'm not thrilled with this, but I am at a loss as to how to stop it. We've talked about getting Galen a buddy to stop him being bored, but our place is smaller than I'd like for two cats. Also, there's no room for another litterbox.

Harri and Patrick shared one box for I don't know...years up until this one when we added Tessie and Kylie. It was never a problem. Two cats can use one box...I have two boxes now, but that's because there're four cats using it on weekends.

Of course, I scoop it every day.

I'm more concerned with Galen's reaction - he's fiercely possessive of his litterbox. When we clean it, he watches, tries to help, and then promptly re-marks it. And looks insulted that we made it smell less like him.

Please, god, if you figure out how to stop this behaviour, let me know ASAP!! My calico, Harley, picked up this habit shortly after Kelly left and I've tried everything I can think of, but to no avail. I'm a night owl, so I don't go to bed til 1-2am. All but maybe a dozen nights since Feb., Harley has woken me at 5:30am seemingly *just* to get attention. (Is there such a thing as a morning-person feline?) It doesn't seem to matter if I try to keep her awake all day, or if I play with her before bedtime, or give her a snack--she really just craves some intense petting and won't let me go back to bed til she gets it. She won't get up on the bed itself because that's the older cat's domain... What's worse it the methods she uses to wake me: clawing at carpet, knocking stuff off shelves, she's even learned how to bang one of the cupbard doors in the bathroom!!!
I've tried locking her in the bathroom, but she's detroying the door. So if you find the answer-PLEASE let me know. I need the sleep.

If you give her what she's asking for, you're just reinforcing her behavior.

I know....but if I don't, she destroys my property. It's tough to lie in bed and tell myself to ignore it when all I can think about is how much it's going to cost to recarpet the condo. It's a no win.

You mentioned Rabbit Run mead. I need their contact information because I "need" several bottle of mead by next Friday. Do you have it? Will you share?

OK, how about this:

You go to bed with Galen.
Wife sets timer for 1 hour later.
When timer goes off, wife removes Galen and entertains him until it is time for her to go to bed.

I take it you keep the bedroom door closed?
