I was saddened to hear that he's launching a new "Opus" strip. It's a complete sellout; the moral equivalent of Bill Watterson allowing a "Calvin and Hobbes" TV show.

I adored Bloom County in the '80s. It was sarcastic, topical, satirical, and hugely funny.

It went rapidly downhill when it shifted from an ensemble cast to focusing on Opus. Outland wasn't very good to begin with, but got even worse when it became the Opus'n'Bill show.

Peanuts was much funnier in the '50s, before Snoopy became the star. I'm sure there are others that have had similar declines. (Want to cite some?) Doonesbury has managed to avoid that particular trap, because Trudeau has a stable of characters and ruthlessly jumps between them.

I'm holding back my opinion ustil I see the strip for a while. I agree, though, that Outland was a pointless read.

I'm a bit worried that Wiley's Non Sequitor may be turing Lucy the Horse into a Hobbes-like foil for Danea. The Danae/Lucy strips are hysterical to us horsey-types when Lucy acts like a *horse* ("talk to the hoof, cowgirl" is classic), but Wiley does *not* need Lucy for Danea to make pointed commentary.

We will see.
