We went to Firefly last night. It was decent - not spectacular, not bad. It's a reasonable local hangout. We were substantially overdressed compared to the other patrons (and the servers). Not that we cared, just a data point.

The atmosphere was nice and the service was good. The food... the only word that comes to mind is "inconsistent". The bread was good, but the ground pea spread was like eating cold split pea soup. The wife's appetizer (lamb-stuffed portabella mushroom) was spectacular where mine (dates stuffed with goat cheese) was merely okay. Likewise the entrees - I had the pork loin, which tasted quite nice, and the wife's comment on her asparagus risotto was "You've made better risotto than this." Apparently their fried chicken is incredibly good, but neither of us was in the mood for it.

I wouldn't mind going back, but I won't be in any hurry. Lots more restaurants in San Francisco to try.

I just wanted to say that I love these little snippets about restaurants. When one catches my interest, I save it to a little special event folder in my browser, and can pull a special dinner plan together with rapid ease when the need arises. And the special bonus of being able to blame you if the place really blows...heheh. I'm happy to let you be my R&D group for SF restaurants.

Hey, that's a great idea!! I'm going to start doing that too. Including blaming madbaker when it blows. ;)

Hahahaha! That's good ... I've been lucky so far, but not been experimenting much with restaurants in SF myself. With our theatre tickets at ACT we have been going the same nights as [livejournal.com profile] madbaker's upstairs neighbors and visiting restaurants with them, so they've already done some of the experimenting, and these are ones they recommend. So far not a louse in the bunch.

Thanks! I do the LJ thing for my own benefit, but it's always nice to hear that other people find it interesting..

I enjoy them too...I end up in the bay area at least once a year and its nice to have a clue as to where to go if the occasion arises :)

hmm. I think I may do the same thing for the seattle area. restaurant reviews in the paper just dont suit my particular mindset, I find....

Don't you just hate that!!! It's the main reason at to why we don't eat out much. I hate to waste money on mediocre food.

I wouldn't say it was mediocre - just inconsistent. I'd go back if a group of people wanted to go there, or for an appetizer after work kinda-thing. But it wouldn't be my first suggestion if people asked "Where's a good place?"

The other main reason being we're still broke new homeowners. *ahem*

But I do find that being able to cook various [unusual?] things as a matter of course makes me more critical when I visit restaurants.. and more likely to try to order things I don't generally make at home.

I appreciate your commentaries also, because we do love to eat out. Someday.
