Last week's Resolution Recipe.
Aug. 27th, 2006 01:11 pm'Cause I made this on Friday, but we didn't eat them until yesterday, and it was waaaay too late when we got home to type this in.
Thin Wheats
1 cup white flour
1 cup white wheat flour
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
4 Tbsp (1/2 stick) butter
1/2 cup milk
(coarse salt)
Heat oven to 325. Combine the flours, sesame seeds, sugar, and salt. Cut in the butter, then stir in the milk, adding just enough to form a workable dough. Divide dough into three pieces and roll it out as thinly as possible - 1/16 inch if possible. Sprinkle with a bit of coarse salt if desired, using the rolling pin to press the salt into the dough.
Cut the dough into 1" or 2" squares. Transfer to baking sheets and bake for 20-25 minutes (or more) until the crackers begin to brown. Cool on a rack.
What worked: People seemed to like them. I didn't bring any home from the event. Yes, these are a clone of a popular commercial snack cracker, but with 1/4 as many ingredients and 1/10 as many syllables in said ingredients.
What didn't: Less convenient than buying a box, I suppose, but it really wasn't all that much work. I thought I could have gotten them thinner, but again, people seemed to like them. And the baking time was closer to 40 minutes; I kept pulling out the crackers on the edge and shuffling the center ones out.
Will I make it again? Probably. It's much snottier than buying a box of crackers.
