Oooh, that smell
Aug. 29th, 2006 07:44 amIf there's one smell that particularly takes me back to childhood, it's the scent of sun-warmed redwood bark.
Schools and playgrounds undertook a change in the '70s from sand to redwood bark - probably a function of post-Prop. 13 costs as well as ease of maintenance. Cats don't use redwood bark as a litterbox, for example. We hated it as kids, because sand was comfy and redwood bark hurt when you fell off the jungle gym. But anyway, that smell instantly evokes my childhood.
