The Mujahedeen Shura Council ("an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups that includes al-Qaeda in Iraq") responded to Pope Benedict's remarks from last week. They object to his referring to historical spreading of Islam "by the sword."

Their statement says, in part, "We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose head tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (killed by) the sword." (Emphasis added.)

Remember what the Mahdi did to Chinese Gordon in the Sudan? Unfortunately, the Muslim world does this to itself now and then in some nasty cycle. I hope they can regain their reputation as educated scientists and problem-solvers in my lifetime. Shooting a nun four times in the back doesn't gain my respect in the exchange of freedom of speech and ideas, and makes me wonder why the Muslim world doesn't turn itself inside-out to rid itself of these animals. I would think that Muslims would be more incensed by these violent folks who claim to speak for Muslims as a whole.

Doesn't this resemble the "no one can beat up my brother except me!" argument? "Unbelievers are not allowed to state the blindingly obvious about our faith! Only WE can do that!!!!!"
