Taking the advice of our CSA farmers (who supply the restaurant with produce), the wife and I went to Quince Friday for my birthday. Quince is a tony neighborhood restaurant in San Francisco's Pacific Heights. They do primarily Italian food, but use lots of heirloom vegetables.

It was perfect for the occasion. The restaurant is small - perhaps 20 tables - but it felt intimate and cozy rather than crowded. I was not overdressed in the suit but there were other people in jeans. Again, a neighborhood place, but I'd have to have a much thicker wallet to be a regular.

I had a crustless quiche-like appetizer (with nettles) and duck breast for my entree. The wife ate tuna tartare and... um... something else. They redo their menus every day; mine said "Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] madbaker!" at the top. (They asked if it was a special occasion when we made the reservation.)

We were there for maybe an hour, 90 minutes; but it was unrushed and felt longer. In a good way.
Would I go back? For a special occasion, sure. Quite worthwhile trying.
