Jan. 25 -- New York City may wrap its free condoms in a subway-themed design to boost safe sex and reduce the number of HIV/AIDS cases, the Associated Press said, citing Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden. My thoughts on possible slogans:
The city is developing ways to brand the 18 million free condoms it distributes each year to get more people to use them, and the subway theme, which could feature different train lines and maps, is one idea, AP said. The Health Department also plans to track the use of the condoms through its annual community health survey, AP said.
The city is working with Lifestyles brands, a division of Ansell Ltd., to develop the new packaging, AP said. New York now pays Lifestyles 4 cents per condom, or $720,000 a year, AP said.
More than 100,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV and AIDS, and the disease is the city's third leading cause of death for people under age 65, AP said. About 1,000 people a year learn they have AIDS without ever knowing they had the virus that causes it, making it more likely they could spread the disease through unsafe sex, AP said.
