Monarch Watch sells garden "waystation kits" to encourage Monarch butterflies. Growing up in California, that's the butterfly I think of.

I tried planting milkweed on our hill a couple years back and it didn't take; the soil may have been too well-drained for it to root properly. (I probably should have sprouted it inside first, too.) I think the top of our yard will work, however. I don't think I'll apply for certification - it's basically a sign you can post in your garden.

Can you plant a butterfly bush or are they considered noxious weeds in your county? Would a butterfly such as the monarch even be attracked to one? (yeah, it's been too many years sinc kindergarten for me to remember diddly about monarchs...) We've had great success in attracting butterfinkles up here in An Tir with butterfly bushes.
