You'd think you'd have learned to not show learning by now.

Do not use phrases like "The Fed is trying to navigate between Scylla and Charibdis" while talking to a financial reporter. It confuses them and makes them skittish.

The sad thing is that I really wasn't trying to show off my liberal-arts education. It was the analogy that first came to mind.

God, that's so much fun.

You should say it and provide a 1 page abstract for reference.

It is hard to believe that making a reference to a Greek myth commonly taught to grade schoolers can be believed to be "showing off".

I'm not so sure that it's commonly taught to grade schoolers anymore.

Really? I know we had a unit on Greek and Roman mythology in my fifth or sixth grade reading class.

You could tell them that "Atlantis is gaining an advantage in it's struggle with Muu". It always worked better on the new-age types, and makes no pretense of a formal education.

True, but it references new-age whimsy. Not appropriate for business settings.

What, the guy was too young to listen to The Police?

I've given up on the whole "not showing off" thing. Some people take on the persona of class clown -- I've simply accepted my role of departmental nerd and turned it into a game.

What she said. It's fun to throw liberal arts around an engineering environment - it just messes 'em up.

When NetScreen moved into a new building, we were asked to name our classrooms, using a "famous scientists/educators" theme. The boyz came up with Einstein and Aristotle. My boss insisted on equal time for women, so I gave one for one matches w/ Curie and Hypatia off the top of my head. I just got looks...

I've actually had this conversation:
"You're going to have to change this. The Captain's not gonna understand it."

"Sarge, the Captain is a lot more educated than you are."

The sad thing is: I've had it more than once.
