As usual this morning, I walked into the bathroom to take my shower. Galen was sitting on the (closed) toilet seat, staring attentively at the ceiling and chirruping.

Even in my semi-awake state I interpreted this as his moth-hunting behavior. Yup, there was a small one on the ceiling. So, I stood on the toilet and brushed the moth with a broom to dislodge it.

...at which point, instead of coming down where Galen could eat it, the moth fluttered away and disappeared. Galen stayed in the bathroom for another fifteen minutes, waiting semi-patiently.

I apologized, but he still gave me a dirty look.

Rebo, still, after years and years, will often wait for me to turn out my light when I'm done reading at night, and roll over to sleep. The reason? Because once, back when we were living in El Cerrito, a moth came out of the light, and was great fun for hours ... (until the battery ran out, then he stopped playing with it).

Ours are not intelligent enough to give us dirty looks when the moths disappear. But they continue to plead for us to give them moths to play with incessantly, even when the reason the last moth has disappeared is that it's under their own paws.

Instead of trying to get the bug down to cat level, Wendigo and I have worked out a system where I get her up to bug level. I lift her up and create a platform with my hands. She balances on the platform with her hind feet leaving her front feet free to catch the bug. (It's quite an act--we should take it one the road.) Sometimes she will even come get me from another room to come give her a boost. At least I get credit for the assist...

Oh! I forgot to mention--it is important to avert one's eyes during the final kill or risk getting falling bug bits in the face.

I do this with my cat too. She's got great balance.

It's tougher to do that with twelve-foot ceilings, hence why I used a broom.
