Notes from a vacation: August 23
Sep. 7th, 2007 10:05 amThere will be pictures at some point over at
bonacorsi's journal. I'm not going to kvetch about their lack now, however - she's been busy locating our missing frequent flyer miles, helping with the shopping for Bardic, getting paper for mask-making on Sunday, etc etc etc.
London to Berlin
Got up, checked out from the hotel, walked ten minutes to Paddington Station and paid for luggage stowage. The flight didn't leave until 4 PM, so we had a few hours. Given the short amount of time available, what did we choose to do? The British Museum!
...Okay, not necessarily the best choice for spending only one hour, but it's what we had. We felt like stereotypical tourists as we trotted through looking at the Rosetta Stone, the Elgin Marbles, and the Sutton Hoo trove. ("Okay, Rosetta Stone, check! On to the next!") Wowee; we could have spent far more time even on those three exhibits, but we felt time pressure since we were advised to get to Heathrow early.
Which we did - so early that they wouldn't let us check our bags yet. Sigh. Of course we could have spent another hour (easily) at the British Museum and still had plenty of time. Then, to top things off, the flight was delayed half an hour... at least it gave me the time to do reconnaissance at the duty-free for single malt buying on the way home.
It was a very bumpy flight, but landing in Germany we saw our first blue sky and sunset of the trip. The hotel recommended a nearby restaurant, which wasn't fancy but suited us just fine -- it was basic German bistro fud. Despite having dinner at 9 PM, the place just got more crowded as the evening went on. I'm not sure if that's Berlin in particular or Germany in general.
